I’ve been a lover of music for most of my life. But really who hasn’t? I’m not a person who seeks out total silence and I find that having music on often helps me concentrate, retain information, and enhance my creativity. My first exposure to classical music, that I can remember, was when I was a kid watching Fantasia. Since then I’ve grown to really appreciate classical music and have taken it upon myself to educate myself in the art. So that’s why, in my semi-struggle to make this list I decided to include “Go see an orchestral performance”. I also live less than 2 miles from SPAC, the summer home of the Philadelphia Orchestra and haven’t ever taken the opportunity to see it. A shame.
It wasn’t hard to choose a night since I saw Yo Yo Ma was a special guest on a Friday when one of the pieces was Ravel’s Bolero. My friends Sarah and Bonnie came along and I brought wine. Not very good wine… but wine.
I loved it! It was exactly how I thought it would be and the night itself was gorgeous. It was pretty packed. I’m not sure if that’s how it always is or if Mr. Ma really brings in a crowd. Up until this point, my only exposure to the orchestra was either listening to a recorded studio album or seeing a live high school performance. So when I heard the music start I was blown away. I knew they were great but hearing professionals first hand is just absolutely incredible. I can’t really explain how pure and perfect it sounded.
There isn’t much else to say about the experience other than that it was fantastic and I want to go again and as often as possible. Thank you to Sarah (and her sister Liz for the comp tickets!) and Bonnie for a lovely evening.
